The beginner’s roadmap to your first flock and first garden
If you’re new to homesteading, start here. This page lays out the decisions in the order you should make them.

Chickens or garden first?
You don’t have to choose forever, but you do have to choose first. Here’s a simple way to decide:
- Start with chickens if you want daily results (eggs), have a small yard, and can build or buy a coop.
- Start with a garden if you have decent sun and soil, enjoy daily outdoor work, and want to lower your grocery bill.
Most people do both within the first year. The order matters less than starting with one and getting it stable before adding the other.
The four pillars
- First Flock — breeds, coop setup, feeding, and health basics.
- First Garden — soil, what to plant first, simple layout, watering.
- Chickens + Garden — how the two work together: compost, pest control, rotations.
- First Harvest — preserving what you grow and raise: eggs, vegetables, storage basics.
